"My Dad taught me everything I know about baseball. What I teach the kids
today, is exactly what my Dad taught me over 30 years ago. To always hustle, know
where the play is, keep your head in the game, and really, just the way the game should be played
which is all out, every pitch. You just never know who is watching you. It's all about applying these
fundamentals to the game, and being smart about it. I love baseball because it's a thinking man's game." - Edward Peña - April 8, 2006
Edward Peña, Jr. grew up playing competitive baseball in Duncanville and at Duncanville High
School and went on to play in different men's leagues in the Metroplex until
he was 21 years old. His love of the game and the longing to "taste the
dirt of a game" is so strong that he started the Arlington Cobra's baseball
club in 2000 with a single 11U team. The following year Peña started another
team that would go on to win the Triple Crown Division 1 World Series in 2004 in the 14U Division.
The Arlington Cobras play competitive baseball through quiet determination and a
focus on fundamentals, a mirror image of Peña's style. Peña prides himself
on the fact that every player who has been a part of the Cobras program and
has the desire to go on to play high school ball, has made his high school
baseball team, and with the intensity of competitiveness throughout Texas,
this is certainly a badge of honor.
Under Pena's leadership in 2005, the Arlington Cobra's expanded to become an
all age group program with 10U, 11U, 12U, 13U and 14U teams. With the
exception of one, all of Pena's teams qualified for at least two (2)
different World Series in 2005. The 11U team went on to capture the
championship in Arc Park League play and the 12U and 14U teams finished
third. The 13U team went on to win the Super Series World Series in 2005 in the
13U American division. This gives the Cobras National Championships in back to back seasons.
Not many other programs in the DFW Metroplex can claim the level of success
demonstrated by the Arlington Cobra's under Peña's command. Expansion of the
Cobras program continued in 2006 with the addition of a 9U team. Peña holds
the head coach position for both the 9U and 12U teams.
If Pena is not on the field, you can find him designing & drawing as an
AutoCAD Designer for Casting Designs Inc., a company that designs and
manufactures column covers, trim, and moldings for the construction industry. Peña
has been married for 19 years and has two children - a fifteen year old son
and five year old daughter. Peña grew up in the DFW area as the middle
child in a fiercely competitive baseball family. His younger brother also
played baseball throughout his high school years.
